Info Sheet - AstraZeneca Vaccine

Info SheetAstraZeneca vaccine

Who Can have:

  1. Free and voluntary to have the vaccine to all people in Australia.
  2. For general community use. Approved for people over 18. ATAGI prefers that it be used in people over the age of 60.
  3. You, your family and your medical professionals might make the decision not to vaccinate if, say, the person is very elderly and frail, or at end of life. Please discuss with us if you have concern.
  4. People on blood thinners and those who are immune compromised can have this vaccine.
  5. There is not enough data yet to confirm the safety in pre -pregnancy, pregnancy and breast feeding. Need to weigh out the risks and benefits.
  6. People who are not allergic to COVID 19 vaccine.
  7. People who have NO history of Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis or antiphospholipid syndrome with thrombosis or any past history of idiopathic splanchnic (mesenteric, portal, splenic) vein thrombosis or capillary filling syndrome.

  1. Scientists have been working on vaccines for years and AZ vaccines have undergone all the phases of trials and full assessment before approval. Has unprecedented number of volunteers for the trials, therefore, able to complete trials in short period of time.
  2. Store at 2 to 8 degree Celsius. Have lots of manufacturer plants around the world including CSL in Australia.
  3. Pfizer vac: store at -70 degree Celsius. Manufactured in USA and Belgium only.
  4. Safety and efficacy over 65: No concern based on overseas data. Approved by TGA.
  5. Does not contain live coronavirus.
  6. Does not contain embryonic cells but a virus. The virus is genetically modified. The genetic code of the virus has been removed and the genetic code for the COVID spike has been added. This means the modified virus can enter the human cells but it cannot replicate and therefore cannot create disease (COVID 19).
  7. None of the vaccine ingredients are of human or animal origin and there are no food, latex, gelatine or preservative in the COVID 19 vaccines
  8. Receiving the vaccine will not result in positive COVID 19 swab test.

  1. Reduce severity of disease and transmission.
  2. Vaccination is effective in significantly reducing symptomatic cases, hospital admissions, and deaths from COVID 19 in older age group.
  3. As with all vaccines, immunity is not guaranteed for all individuals. Complete protection from severe disease and hospitalisation after 22 days of the first dose of AZ vaccine is 73%. 100% after two doses.
  4. Following 2 doses of AZ vaccines, the efficacy against COVID 19 is 62%.
  5. The efficacy increases to 73% when a longer dose interval of 12 weeks is used.
  6. No one died in the trial group who received the vaccine. One patient died in the trial but received the placebo instead.

When to have:

  1. We encourage you to have the vaccine as soon as possible.
  2. Two doses 12 weeks apart.
  3. If given too early or delay in having the second dose, may affect the efficacy.
  4. If already had COVID 19 infection before, still advised to have vaccination after 6 months.
  5. Any vaccine (eg: flu vaccine) and COVID 19 vaccine have to be at least 7 days apart.

Side Effect:

  1. Side effect of vaccine is minimum and short lived eg sore arm, fatigue, headache, chill, fever joint pain and muscle aches.
  2. People with severe allergic reaction to any vaccine or injectable medicine may be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine but precautions will first need to be discussed.
  3. Anaphylaxis: 2-5 people per million.
  4. People with history of anaphylaxis should be observed for 30 mins. Others, 15 mins.
  5. Having vaccination won’t weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to other illness.

Post vaccination:

  1. Post COVID 19 vaccine injection: Apply gentle pressure to injection site. DO NOT RUB. Remove cotton and tape after a few mins. No need to use Panadol or Nurofen routinely.
  2. As not 100% protective after the first dose, still can get COVID 19 infection between the two vaccinations. Therefore, need to practice social distancing, washing hands and wearing mask.
  3. If have symptoms after the vaccination (s), still need to test for COVID 19 infection.
  4. It is uncertain how long the immunity will last for. Booster dose is being developed.

Other considerations:

  1. To date, no data suggestive that COVID 19 can be transmitted through urine and faeces.
  2. Uncertain about the efficacy on the variants of the COVID 19. Believed to have better protection against UK strain then South African strain.
  3. Other vaccine approved for use in Australia: Pfizer Comirnaty.
  4. Other vaccine awaiting approval by TGA for use in Australia: Novavax –2 doses 3 weeks apart and soon to apply for TGA approval is Moderna (USA) (2 doses).
  5. Oral vaccine: Symvivo, stable in room temp. Phase 1 already commenced late 2020
  6. Other vaccines approved in the world: Sinopharm and CanSino from China and Gameleya from Russia
